This is a step-by-step guide for setting the Submission element into your module or lesson.

πŸ“Œ What Is the Submission Element?

The Submission element allows learners to turn in assignments β€” either as text or file uploads. Once submitted, the learner is automatically marked as "passed" for this assessment. This is ideal for tracking deliverables in cohort-based or project-driven learning environments.

βž• How to Add a Submission to Your Course

  1. Open the Curriculum tab of your course.

  2. Click on βž• Add Element from the left-hand panel.

  3. Scroll down to the Assessment section.

  4. Select Submission from the list.

🎯 A new Submission module will be added to your curriculum timeline.

βš™οΈ Basic Element Settings

Every Submission element includes the standard:

  • General Settings

  • Requirements

  • Visibility

  • Metadata

πŸ‘‰ Want a refresher on these?

🧩 Submission-Specific Settings (Unique to This Element)

(See screenshot below)

Scroll down to the bottom of the element editor to configure what makes Submission powerful: the actual submission options and rules.

1. ✍️ Edit Questions & Submission Format

Click the Edit Questions button to begin.

(See screenshot below)

You’ll start with two default questions β€” feel free to customize them or add more prompts.

These questions guide the submission or can act as reflection prompts.

πŸ›  Submission Format Options:

(See screenshot below)

Format

Description

Options

Text

Learners write their submission directly on the platform

βœ… Mark as Required

File Upload

Learners upload one or more files (e.g., PDFs, Docs, images)

βœ… Mark as Required
βœ… Allow Multiple Files

Use both options if you want learners to answer a question and upload a file.

2. ⏰ Deadline

(See screenshot below)

Set a deadline for learners to submit their work. After the deadline, learners will no longer be able to submit unless the date is extended.

3. πŸ”” Reminders

(See screenshot below)

Set up to three automatic reminders before the deadline to prompt learners to submit their work on time.

4. πŸ”’ Indexes

(See screenshot below)

Toggle the option to hide question indexes and numbering if you'd prefer a cleaner, unnumbered layout for your submission questions.

πŸ‘€ Learner Experience

When learners access the Submission element:

  • They will see one or more submission sections based on your format selection (text and/or file).

  • If you've added guiding questions, these will appear above the submission areas.

  • Once submitted, the element is marked completed for that learner.

🧾 Learners can submit once unless you manually reset the attempt.

(See the screenshot below)

βœ… Best Practices

  • Use a clear title (e.g., "Module 1: Case Study Submission")

  • Add resources in the Description field to support learners (e.g., templates, rubrics)

  • Use Reminders + Deadline to increase on-time submission rates

  • Mix text + file upload to cover multiple types of assignments
